The year 2005, marks the 12th anniversary of the awards. The National Aboriginal Achievement Awards were created in 1994 to celebrate and promote positive role models to Aboriginal youth. The awards are part of the work of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, a non-profit organization that encourages and empowers young Aboriginal people in order to advance their educational and career opportunities. Since 1988, the Foundation has provided more than $16 million to deserving Aboriginal students across the country, with scholarship disbursements reaching more than $2 million each year.

The 12th Annual National Aboriginal Achievement Awards was held at a gala awards ceremony in Saskatoon at the Saskatoon Centennial Auditorium & Convention Centre on Thursday, March 31, 2005. Supported by the public and private sectors, this Aboriginal initiative represents the highest honour the community bestows upon its own achievers. Individuals of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis ancestry who have reached a significant level of achievement in their respective occupations are eligible for nomination. The show is scheduled to be televised Tuesday, June 21, 2005 in recognition of National Aboriginal Day on CBC and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. Co-Hosts, Andrea Menard and Michael Greyeyes, promise a night to remember, as fourteen exceptional Aboriginal men and women, including one youth recipient and one lifetime achiever, will be honoured as part of a entertainment extravaganza.
